At Jena's Laboratory of Glass Science, we are interested in the production, characterization and physical understanding of glasses. Our activities include the wider fields of glass ceramics, glass-crystal composites, and, sometimes, inorganic or hybrid crystalline materials. We advocate this field in research and education, with a particular focus on the societal impact of sustainable glass products.
Glass is a versatile material used ubiquitously in everyday products, but also – less visibly – across practically all fields of technology, from optics and photonics to chemical technology, energy, agriculture and the arts. Our research is aimed at improving the performance of glass products towards a more sustainable world.
Glass science is a strongly interdisciplinary field, therefore, we are a diverse group of materials researchers, engineers, physisists, crystallogaphers, mineralogists and computer scientists.
